Is plugging a hole in our big drinking cup with polyurethane safe?

We have a giant drinking cup with a big hole in the bottom my friend told me that polyurethane would be a good choice to seal the hole b/c it dries hard. I was wondering if I do do this will the alcohol eat through the poly seal and possibly release chemicals that we would be harmful if it was ingested. Please help!
