Doesn't Japan show why nuclear power is a bad idea?

No, it isn't a bad idea. Building a nuclear reactor in a highly prone earthquake zone is and that's not a duh. But suppose you're right, let's just don't build them because something MIGHT happen and we get exposed to radiation. Instead let's all put windmills in our azzes and run around generating electricity that way. The reality is that if you lefties are going to eliminate coal fired electric generating plants, hydro electric plants, and nuclear plants then where can we put enough of those unreliable windmills to power out nation? Instead why don't we just get everybody to commit suicide so the trees and the animals can have the earth back. Maybe then that will please you tree huggers.
