How many different types of English accents are there in Great Britain?

Also, why is it, to the North American ear, that certain words, when spoken by a Brit, sound completely different when compared to the same word spoken by an American or Canadian? For instance, I've noticed that when Brits say "saw", it sounds like "sawr".
